Week 7: Sewing Techniques

This week’s pattern drafting class was focused entirely on honing our skills in creating a basic fitted blouse and tailored skirt. While I haven’t started work on my final project yet, this session was invaluable in building the technical foundation I’ll need for later stages.

We began with a lecture that provided essential insights into:

  • Converting a bodice block into a pattern with precise seam allowances.
  • Manipulating darts to create a more tailored fit.
  • Understanding fabric grain and its importance in garment construction.
  • Construction techniques for collars, sleeves, and hems.

This theoretical overview reinforced the core principles of pattern making and garment assembly.

The tutorial was a deep dive into applying these principles, including:

  • Dart manipulation on the women’s bodice block, focusing on accurate placement and proportions.
  • Drafting patterns for a blouse with a collar and a tailored skirt.
  • Creating notch patterns, blending lines, and adding seam allowances to ensure clean assembly.
  • Pattern layout on fabric and attaching interfacing in preparation for cutting.

This step-by-step guidance helped me better understand how to transition from a pattern block to a fabric-ready piece.

During the practical session, we worked hands-on with:

  • Marking seam allowances on patterns and laying them out for cutting.
  • Attaching interfacing and preparing for sewing.
  • Overlocking and sewing darts for a clean finish.
  • Sewing shoulder seams, attaching collars, and adding sleeves.
  • Finishing with topstitching hems, creating buttonholes, and attaching buttons.

These tasks provided an opportunity to practice precision and attention to detail, ensuring the garments looked polished and professional.

This week was all about mastering the fundamentals of pattern drafting and garment construction. Although I haven’t started on my final project yet, I feel more confident in my ability to tackle it after this intensive session. The techniques we learned—like dart manipulation and collar construction—will undoubtedly play a crucial role when I begin working on my final pieces.
