Week 11: Fitting

 This week was an exciting and crucial phase in my final project journey: the fitting stage. I had my model try on the test garments for both looks, and this hands-on session provided invaluable insights into fit, design, and functionality. It was a challenging but enlightening experience, where every adjustment helped refine my understanding of pattern drafting and garment construction.

Fitting Look One: Tailoring to Perfection



For Look One, the test fit revealed several areas that needed adjustment:

  1. Frills Adjustment:
    The bottom frills needed elongation to balance the proportions of the garment. This required recalculating the frill dimensions and ensuring they still maintained their flow and structure when worn.

  2. Sleeve Refinement:
    The sleeve length wasn’t quite right for my model’s arm measurements. To fix this, I slashed the sleeve pattern and shortened the drop while ensuring the puff effect was retained. This adjustment taught me how small pattern manipulations can drastically improve the fit and aesthetic of a garment.

  3. Waistline Modification:
    I had to drop the waistline by 3 cm to better align with my model’s proportions. Additionally, I adjusted the pattern to accommodate a plus-sized bust measurement, ensuring a more comfortable and flattering fit.

  4. Placket and Collar Design:
    While working on this look, I decided to incorporate a hidden placket for a more polished, elegant finish. Adding a stand collar brought a sense of boldness and sophistication, perfectly complementing the overall design.

Fitting Look Two: Embracing Drama and Elegance



For Look Two, the fitting session allowed me to explore more exaggerated and dynamic design choices:

  1. Exaggerated Sleeves:
    To make the sleeves more dramatic, I increased the size of each layer, giving the garment a bolder and more eye-catching silhouette. This adjustment helped elevate the overall aesthetic and aligned it with my vision for the look.

  2. Dart Placement and Shoulder Adjustment:
    The dart placement and size needed refinement to better fit my model. I adjusted these elements to align with her measurements, ensuring a more tailored and professional look. Additionally, I dropped the shoulder seam slightly to allow for better arm mobility and ease of movement.

  3. Hidden Placket:
    Similar to Look One, I decided to add a hidden placket to enhance the elegance of this garment. It’s fascinating how such a subtle design choice can elevate the entire outfit, making it appear more refined and cohesive.

Lessons Learned and Takeaways

This fitting process was more than just making adjustments—it was an incredible learning experience that deepened my understanding of pattern drafting and garment construction. Here’s what I took away from this week:

  • Adaptability:
    Working with a real model emphasized the importance of adaptability in fashion design. No matter how precise the patterns seem on paper, the real test is how the garment fits and moves on a body.

  • Attention to Detail:
    Small adjustments, like dart placement or sleeve length, can have a huge impact on the overall look and feel of a garment. This week reminded me to always pay attention to these finer details.

  • Expanding Creativity:
    Thinking beyond the original design and making bold choices—like exaggerating sleeves or adding a stand collar—taught me to embrace creativity and refine my vision throughout the process.

  • Pattern Drafting Mastery:
    Each adjustment, whether it was slashing and spreading the sleeve pattern or resizing darts, helped me better understand the intricacies of pattern drafting. These skills will undoubtedly come in handy for future projects.

Final Thoughts

Week 11 was a turning point in my final project. Not only did I refine my designs to better fit my model, but I also gained invaluable insights into the practical aspects of garment construction. The process of adjusting patterns, sewing test fits, and brainstorming design tweaks has given me a stronger foundation in fashion design.

As I move forward, I feel more confident in my ability to create garments that are both beautiful and functional. This week has inspired me to approach each step with precision, creativity, and a willingness to learn. I’m excited to see how these lessons will influence the final outcome of my project!

  Task 3 Brief : For this task, I finally get to turn my idea into an actual design!  After the visual analysis, I now need to pick one of the three ideas I proposed in Task 2 and develop it further. This means experimenting with color, composition, typeface, and positioning while keeping design principles in mind. I can use any medium to bring my concept to life, making sure it effectively conveys my visual message. I intend to continue with the medium of digital artwork The final design should be in A4 size,  and labeled properly. Along with the design, I need to write a 200-word rationale explaining why I made certain design choices, the meaning behind my work, and the design principles I applied.
