Week 9 : Pattern Drafting for Final Project

After the independent learning week, where I dived into experimenting with pattern making, Week 9 was all about refining my efforts and receiving guidance. This class turned out to be a pivotal moment in my final project’s development.

Presenting My Patterns to Ms. Melina

I brought the pattern pieces I had created using the fashion pattern-making book and presented them to Ms. Melina during class. Sharing my work felt like a blend of nervousness and excitement—it was my first time attempting patterns independently, and I wasn’t sure how accurate they were.

Ms. Melina carefully reviewed my patterns, pointing out areas that needed adjustments and explaining how to refine them. Her feedback wasn’t just about correcting mistakes; it was incredibly educational. I gained clarity on:

  1. Proportions: Adjusting specific pattern pieces to better align with my designs and ensure proper fit.
  2. Techniques: Understanding advanced methods to perfect darts, seams, and structural elements.
  3. Efficiency: Simplifying overly complicated aspects of my patterns to make the process smoother.

The Process of Refinement

The collaborative process of refining my patterns made the entire workflow feel significantly more streamlined and efficient. Here’s what I achieved by the end of the session:

  • Master Plan Development: With my refined patterns, I could now visualize the complete garment-making process. It was like piecing together a puzzle where each part fit perfectly.
  • Steps and Techniques: I took detailed notes on the steps I would need to follow, from fabric cutting to assembling the final garment. Writing these steps in sequence helped me plan ahead and gave me a clear roadmap to follow.

Some of the key techniques I prepared to master included:

  • Seam allowances and accurate marking.
  • Perfecting darts and ensuring they were clean and precise.
  • Attaching collars and sleeves with proper finishing.
  • Exploring decorative and functional sewing techniques to elevate my designs.

Reflection and Learning

This week was a reminder of the importance of guidance in the learning process. While independent experimentation is invaluable, having an expert’s input took my work to another level. It also helped me build confidence in my abilities and assured me that I was on the right track.

Here are a few insights I gained from Week 9:

  • Iterative Improvement: Patterns are rarely perfect on the first try. Iteration and refinement are essential.
  • Seeking Help: Reaching out for feedback isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a necessary step for growth.
  • Planning Ahead: Writing down the steps made the process feel less overwhelming and gave me a clear direction to follow.

Excited for What’s Next

With my master plan and refined patterns in hand, I feel well-prepared to move forward with fabric cutting and garment construction. This week’s progress has brought me closer to bringing my designs to life, and I’m eager to see how the final garments turn out.

I left the studio feeling more motivated than ever, knowing that I now had a solid foundation to build upon. The combination of my efforts and Ms. Melina’s expert advice has set the stage for what I hope will be a strong final presentation.
