Anoushka Bedi- Task 3

 Task 3 Brief :

For this task, I finally get to turn my idea into an actual design!

After the visual analysis, I now need to pick one of the three ideas I proposed in Task 2 and develop it further. This means experimenting with color, composition, typeface, and positioning while keeping design principles in mind.

I can use any medium to bring my concept to life, making sure it effectively conveys my visual message. I intend to continue with the medium of digital artwork The final design should be in A4 size,  and labeled properly. Along with the design, I need to write a 200-word rationale explaining why I made certain design choices, the meaning behind my work, and the design principles I applied.

Since this is a work-in-progress task, I have to check in with my lecturer every week to show updates and get feedback—plus, attendance is marked during these consultations.

In the end, my blog must document all the work I’ve done for this module, including this final task and a reflection on my learning experience. Time to put everything I’ve learned into action!

Development Stage:

From my perious task, I wanted to carry foward with my sketch idea number 1 and 2 in to this development stage towards my final artwork.

Fig 1.1 : Sketch Idea 1

From my sketch idea 1 shown in fig 1.1, i would like to bring the same dynamism into the development stage. From the composition, emphasis by negative space and the use of Gestalt Theory of ; "Closure and Continuity", these design principles has overally impacted how the art grabs the audience's attention.

Fig 1.2 Sketch Idea 2

From my Sketch Idea 2, i would like to carry foward the sense of tension brought by the composition of the image. I personally feel the color scheme could have more contrast as this current color scheme makes the overall artwork look flat, not giving justice to the message and overal tension created by the composition.

Undertanding what i liked from both these sketch ideas is a crucial step in brain stormming hwat i would like to bring forth into these developements.

Developed Sketchs;

IDEA #1:

Fig 2.1 Developed Sketch #1

This sketch has principles of balance, unity and movement to create that visual harmony that grabs the audience's attention. Balance is brought in with the symmetrical arrangement of the lotus and snake, unity brough through the close composotion of elements that lead towards a common focal point tpwards the central lotus, while moevment i brought through the dynamic lines used to contrust the snake's silhouette. The snake's silhouette was inpired by a refernece tutorial i saw on pintrest, shown in Fig 2.2

Fig 2.2 Snake's Silhouette Reference

I personally like my artwork to first serve the eye before demanding attention towards the messaging, and thats what inspired the creation of this idea, along with the 2 sketch ideas form task 2.

From the 2 ideas sketched out from task 2, I made a number of changes during the design phase to enhance my work's overall appearance and feel.

I started by experimenting with color to better blend subtlety and intensity. I changed the contrast to highlight specific regions while maintaining the overall aesthetic coherence shown through the glowing lotus on top of the red and balck gradient background. To make sure important these components shone out without being overpowering, I also experimented with brightness and saturation.

I improved the element placement and composition to establish a more strong visual hierarchy. In order to keep everything neat and legible, I balanced negative space and repositioned focal points; being the central lotsus to allow the viewer's eye to flow easily over the design. To make things feel more unified, alignment and spacing were adjusted.

I modified the lighting and shadows to create a more three-dimensional impression and applied layering colors and types of bruhses form procreate to provide additional depth and complexity. In order to ensure that everything felt organically interwoven, I also focused on seamlessly merging pieces.

Last but not least, I concentrated on textures and details, highlighting specific regions to provide depth and realityseen through the differnt bush used for the snake's scales compared to the softer brush used for the lotus. The finished design appeared more polished and high-quality after fine-tuning complicated elements.

The combination of red and purple, which are part of the split-complementary and analogous color schemes, served as my inspiration shown through Fig 2.3. Because analogous hues are adjacent to one another on the color wheel, red and purple combine to provide a seamless, harmonious effect.

IDEA #2:

Fig 2.4 Developed Sketch #2

For this development i decided to get feeback from my friends; few of them suggested to lighten the background to create more emphasis towards the design. Exprimenting with yellow was an attempt from  my side to highlight the colors of teh snake's skin and lotus but i found that it deminished the tension i wanted to maintain from both the snakes preying over a lotus.

I further experimented with removing the outline to let the colors tell the story instead of the lines. This idea was fun to experiment because it engages the audience even further through letting the audience imply what shapes the colors take. I tried changing the artwork from a landscape to portrait formatted image, to experiment with the amount of negative space available in the image, turns out i did like this format better as it makes the deisgn more complete and finsihed.

IDEA #3:

Fig 2.5 Developed Sketch #3

The last development shown in Fig 2.5 is a futher development form Fig 2.4. The first development; Fig 2.1 had a more deeper and darker color background, which i wasnt too satisfied by because it felt there wasnt much contrast to emphasize the snake as much as it did for the lotus, so i tried the next extreme, developing the second sketch; Fig 2.4 with a light yellow background but that didnt suit the design as well as it muted teh tension i intended to continue from my Task 2, Idea 2 sketch; Fig 1.2.

So the next rational step i took was to try a background that was more cool toned, was able to contrast all the colors for the lotus and teh snake yet still dont deminish the tension i wanted to maintain.
This led to the descision of picking the cool light tone blue.

To further ensure that the sense of tension still remained i tried zooming into the design creating a stronger focus. Doing so I also noticed that this reduced the negative space from teh previous deisgns but somehow was teh perfect balance that didnt overcrowd the artwork, helping it maintain its visual harmony.

Finalized design:

Rationale:

The inspiration for this drawing stemmed from the experience of growing up and choosing one's path of success". Everyone defines success very differently, one may pick the 9-5 route and find their happiness there, some may just want to have a peaceful life near nature and some live for the thrill of creating something for themselves.

Everyone has been caught between two worlds: one that demanded inner serenity, purpose, and self-discovery, and another that offered success, money, and notoriety. We had been taught since childhood that success meant moving up the success ladder, but some may secretly yearned for something more significant, something that wasn't determined by worldly wealth or prestige.

As we come to a turning point in our life, this tension becomes more apparent. We could be presented with a great professional opportunity that would provide us with both financial stability and the respect of our peers. However, a more subdued voice inside may push us to choose a different course, one that involves self-discovery, personal development, and alignment with our core beliefs.

The lotus shows up, peacefully lying in the midst of a wide area as a focal point, unaffected by the chaos surrounding it, in the design. The two snakes, ever-present in our minds, coiled at opposite ends of our thoughts—one whispering of ambition and success, the other of freedom and authenticity. They kept going back and forth between each other, never giving in and constantly luring us in with their own idea of happiness.

This painting is balanced by the composition of the snakes and lotus, equidistant on either side of a central lotus. Contrast is achieved through bold color contrast, such as yellow and pink, red and dark teal, and the contrast between cooler teal colors and the scales of the snake. Emphasis is achieved with strong pink lotus as the focal point, contrasted against a cool blue, and the reflected snakes providing symmetry and duality. Other elements of design still counterbalance the composition: movement is shown through the dynamism of the snakes' body structure, repetition is incorporated easily through manipulation of the two major forms' placement, and proportion is wisely selected through the sizes of the snakes in relation to the lotus. Depth is also added, reinforcing the theme of conflict inside and discovery and naturally concentrating the viewer's gaze throughout the artwork.

Feedback:

Week 6: Since i didnt finish my developments on this week, ms suggested some ideas for my development and how to format my blog to look more presentable.
Week 7: ms, suggested few changes to be made on the ifnal drawing ushc as adding finer lines, red eyes to add on teh overall tension of the drawing and the proportion of the snake to the lotus.
