Week 8: Independent Learning Week
Independent Learning Week provided a valuable opportunity to dive deeper into self-directed exploration and preparation for Week 9’s final project consultations. Rather than merely planning, I decided to take a proactive approach to enhance my skills and refine my vision for the final project.
Experimenting with Pattern Making
During this week, I took the initiative to purchase a fashion pattern-making book to independently explore creating patterns. This step was driven by my desire to not only enhance my technical abilities but also to better align my design vision with tangible outcomes.
The process turned out to be both challenging and rewarding:
Matching Patterns to My Design Vision:
I pored over the book, identifying pattern pieces that resonated with the aesthetic I envisioned for my two looks. This allowed me to see how theoretical designs could be translated into actual pattern work.
Experimentation:
Combining different elements from the book, I experimented with adjustments and tweaks to ensure the patterns would suit my designs. This hands-on process was invaluable in helping me understand how pattern pieces come together to form a cohesive garment.Preparing to Showcase:
My goal was to showcase these experimental patterns to Ms. Melina during the upcoming consultation in Week 9. This added a layer of purpose and motivation to my efforts, ensuring I was well-prepared for feedback and further refinement.
Reflection
This week reinforced the importance of self-driven learning in fashion design. The experimentation with patterns allowed me to bridge the gap between conceptual ideas and practical execution. It was fulfilling to see my designs begin to take shape, even if only on paper and through test fits.
Key takeaways from the week:
- The process of pattern making is as creative as it is technical.
- Experimentation helps bring clarity to design ideas, turning abstract visions into actionable patterns.
- Having additional resources like the pattern-making book expands the scope of what I can achieve independently.
