WEEK 5: Making Skirt

My Journey into Skirt Making

In my fashion design pattern-making class, we recently embarked on the journey of creating a skirt from scratch. The process involved learning a variety of essential sewing techniques—from overlocking to attaching waistbands. As someone new to these techniques, I quickly realized that constructing a skirt isn’t as simple as it looks. Each step requires precision, practice, and patience. This blog will walk through my experience and some of the challenges I faced while learning to sew a skirt.

The first step in our skirt-making process was overlocking the edges of the fabric. Overlocking (or serging) ensures that the fabric edges don’t fray, creating a clean and professional finish. I found this step to be fairly straightforward, but controlling the overlocker was something that took me a bit of practice. Keeping the fabric aligned and ensuring even stitching around curved edges was tricky at first, but with each practice run, I gained more confidence.

Next came sewing the skirt’s seams and sewing in the darts. This step was all about making sure the pieces came together evenly. It was vital to keep my stitching straight and ensure that both sides of the fabric were aligned correctly. This was the backbone of the skirt, and I knew that any mistake here would affect the entire garment. I found that taking my time with pinning and making sure I was patient with the sewing machine was the key to getting this right.

Once the seams were sewn, it was time to focus on the sewing in teh insvisible zipper. Sewing the invisible zipper is one of those finishing touches that can make or break the overall look of a skirt. I learned that a clean, well-stitched zipper elevates the garment’s quality. While the technique seemed simple, it required precision to ensure the zipper was as invisible as possible from the exterior of the skirt. A slight misstep in the stitching could create puckering, which is something I tried my best to avoid.

Creating the waistband felt like the next big milestone in the skirt-making process. It involved measuring, folding, and sewing the fabric in a way that fit perfectly around the waist. This step tested my accuracy in cutting and stitching. I learned that the waistband needed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Ensuring the width was even throughout and that it matched the skirt’s waistline was a bit challenging but incredibly satisfying once I got it right. unfortunately i didnt take any progress picture because i was so focused on the precision.

Ironing became my best friend throughout this process. After every major stage—whether it was sewing a seam or attaching the waistband—I made sure to press the fabric flat with an iron. This not only gave the skirt a polished look but also made it easier to sew accurately. Pressing the fabric in between stages helped me avoid wrinkles and unwanted creases, and it gave the final garment a professional finish.

Looking back, sewing this skirt was a test of my skills, patience, and attention to detail. From overlocking the edges to the final step of attaching the waistband, each stage brought its own set of challenges. However, I learned that with practice, patience, and precision, even the most difficult tasks could be mastered.

This experience taught me the importance of breaking down the sewing process step by step, and how crucial it is to stay focused on the finer details. I’m excited to apply these skills in future projects and continue improving my techniques!
