WEEK 6: Construction of A Shirt

Image
Mastering Dart Manipulation and Shirt Construction  As I continue my journey in fashion design, the intricacies of pattern-making are becoming more fascinating with each class. Our recent lessons focused on shirt construction, specifically manipulating darts and creating a new bodice pattern complete with a placket and collar. It was both a technical challenge and a rewarding experience. This blog will detail what I learned, from the basics of dart manipulation to constructing key elements of a shirt. One of the first techniques we delved into during this lesson was dart manipulation. For anyone unfamiliar, darts are folds sewn into the fabric to provide shape and contour, particularly in areas like the bust, waist, or shoulders. We began by discussing different types of darts and their role in garment fitting. Then, we had a test on dart manipulation—a pivotal technique that allows us to move the dart from one location to another without altering the fit of the garment. For...

WEEK 5: Making Skirt

Image
My Journey into Skirt Making In my fashion design pattern-making class, we recently embarked on the journey of creating a skirt from scratch. The process involved learning a variety of essential sewing techniques—from overlocking to attaching waistbands. As someone new to these techniques, I quickly realized that constructing a skirt isn’t as simple as it looks. Each step requires precision, practice, and patience. This blog will walk through my experience and some of the challenges I faced while learning to sew a skirt. The first step in our skirt-making process was overlocking the edges of the fabric. Overlocking (or serging) ensures that the fabric edges don’t fray, creating a clean and professional finish. I found this step to be fairly straightforward, but controlling the overlocker was something that took me a bit of practice. Keeping the fabric aligned and ensuring even stitching around curved edges was tricky at first, but with each practice run, I gained more confidence....

WEEK 4: Darts

Image
Mastering Dart and Dart Manipulation in Fashion Design Pattern making is at the core of fashion design, shaping garments to fit the human form. This week in class, we explored one of the fundamental techniques in pattern making—darts and dart manipulation. Understanding how to use and manipulate darts opens up endless possibilities for creating custom shapes, fits, and designs. In this blog post, I’ll break down what I learned about darts, how they work, and how dart manipulation can transform the way a garment looks and fits. A dart is essentially a triangular fold of fabric that is sewn into a garment to give it shape, typically helping it conform to the curves of the body. Darts are commonly used in areas like the bust, waist, and hips to achieve a better fit. In class, we learned that darts play a significant role in shaping garments because they take up excess fabric and allow the material to sit closer to the body. This simple yet effective technique can turn a flat p...

Introduction to Fashion Design

Image
Unfortunately i wasnt present during the first week as my visa took time to come.  there would be more updates the following weeks.... WEEK 2   BASIC SHIRT DETAILINGS RESEARCH COMPILATION We studied the minute intricacies that go into a simple shirt in my "Introduction to Fashion Design" class. Every component, from collars to cuffs, adds to the overall style and usefulness. I increased my awareness of the countless options in shirt details by compiling five different styles for every shirt component as part of our homework. For this task, making a presentation was just as enlightening as the study. I went about the method as follows: 1. Outlining the Framework I began by listing the essential components of the garment I want to display. I chose to concentrate on the primary shirt components—collars, pockets, cuffs, silhouettes, and plackets—because the task asked me to investigate five different styles for each aspect. This method of structuring my research guaranteed t...
